Linguistics in education

I am currently collaborating on various projects with colleagues in Catalonia, the UK and the USA which focus on the implementation of linguistics initiatives in schools, particularly at the secondary level.

Linguistics in Schools Transatlantic Educational Network (LISTEN!)

I founded, alongside Anna Pineda (Pompeu Fabra University, Catalonia), Suzi Loosen (Milwaukee School of Languages, Wisconsin, USA) and Ian Connally (Paschal High School, Texas, USA), the Linguistics in Schools Transatlantic Educational Network (LISTEN!) initiative. We are a network of educators working in schools and universities across Europe and the USA with an interest in developing Linguistics-oriented curricula and resources for primary/secondary (K-12) schools.

The purpose of the network is to provide an opportunity for dialogue between educators and researchers around the world to share our findings and best practice; to find colleagues and collaborators; to discuss and develop ‘Linguistics in Schools’ initiatives; and to build a movement that works towards our common goal of bringing Linguistics to everyone.

We welcome educators and researchers from around the world to join our network and become part of the movement. We also welcome policymakers and other key stakeholders who would like to be involved in making Linguistics in Schools a reality. You can join our network, or participate in our Adopt a Teacher/Linguist! initiative, by signing up here.

Linguistics in MFL project

I am project lead for Spanish on the multi-institutional Linguistics in MFL project, founded by Prof. Adam Ledgeway, Dr Norma Schifano (University of Cambridge), and Dr Michelle Sheehan (Anglia Ruskin University) in 2017. The goal of this project is to introduce a Linguistics ‘content’ component in Modern Languages at Key Stage 5 (A levels) in UK schools. If you are a teacher, you can sign up to take part in our 2018-19 MFL ‘mini-course’ pilot here.
